    The sound barrier is broken

    Test pilot Chuck Yeager flew the rocket-powered Bell X-1 faster than the speed of sound over the California desert, the first person to do so in level flight. Many had feared a plane would shake apart at such speeds. He proved the barrier was something to fly through, not a wall.
