  1. 1783

    The first human rises off the Earth

    In Paris, Jean-François Pilâtre de Rozier climbed into a Montgolfier hot-air balloon and rose into the air on a tether, the first person to leave the ground in flight. The gentle ascent lasted only minutes. It was humanity's first taste of looking down from the sky.

  2. 1997

    Cassini sets off for Saturn

    NASA and Europe launched the Cassini spacecraft on a seven-year voyage to Saturn, carrying the Huygens probe bound for the moon Titan. Cassini spent 13 years circling the ringed planet, finding icy geysers and hidden oceans on its moons. It reshaped what we know about the outer solar system.
