    The Whirlpool Galaxy is spotted

    Charles Messier, hunting for comets from Paris, noted a faint patch of light he catalogued as Messier 51. It was later the first nebula seen to have a spiral shape, a distant galaxy of billions of stars. His careful list of such smudges still guides stargazers today.
