Viking 2 lands on Mars
NASA's Viking 2 set down on the plains of Utopia Planitia, one of the first two craft to land safely on Mars and send back pictures from its surface. The Viking landers scooped up soil and ran the first experiments looking for life on another planet. The results were tantalizing and inconclusive, and we are still looking.
