The first power station lights up New York
Thomas Edison's Pearl Street Station switched on in Lower Manhattan, feeding about 400 lamps for 82 customers from the first commercial central power plant. It was a modest start for the electric grid. Within decades, steady power would reach ordinary homes across the world.
