The Sun unleashes its greatest recorded storm
The Sun hurled a huge cloud of charged particles at Earth in what became known as the Carrington Event, the most powerful geomagnetic storm ever recorded. Auroras lit up skies as far south as the tropics, and telegraph lines sparked and shocked their operators. It is the benchmark scientists still use when they ask how bad space weather could get.
