Niels Bohr is born
Niels Bohr, who mapped the inside of the atom, was born in Copenhagen. His model of electrons circling the nucleus in fixed steps helped launch quantum physics. His Copenhagen institute became a home for a generation of scientists who remade our picture of matter.
The Soviet probe Luna 3 rounded the Moon and photographed the hemisphere no one on Earth had ever seen. The images were grainy, but they revealed a rugged, crater-scarred face turned forever away from us. For the first time, people saw the whole Moon.
