    The first woman joins the Supreme Court

    The U.S. Senate voted unanimously to confirm Sandra Day O'Connor to the Supreme Court, the first woman to sit on it in nearly two centuries. Years earlier, law firms had offered her only secretarial work despite her top grades. She became one of the most pivotal justices of her era.
