    Léon Foucault is born

    Léon Foucault, the French physicist who let anyone watch the Earth turn, was born in Paris. His great pendulum, swinging freely in a Paris hall in 1851, slowly changed its path as the planet rotated beneath it. He also made one of the first accurate measurements of the speed of light.
