    Konstantin Tsiolkovsky is born

    Konstantin Tsiolkovsky, the self-taught schoolteacher who founded the theory of spaceflight, was born in the village of Izhevskoye, Russia. Working alone, he derived the rocket equation still used to plan every launch. He imagined multistage rockets and travel beyond the Earth long before either was possible.
