  1. 1835

    Darwin reaches the Galapagos Islands

    HMS Beagle, with a young naturalist named Charles Darwin aboard, dropped anchor at the Galapagos Islands. The finches, tortoises, and mockingbirds he found there, each island with its own varieties, would nag at him for years and help him work out how species change over time. Modern biology grew from that visit.
