Mars Global Surveyor reaches the red planet
NASA's Mars Global Surveyor slipped into orbit around Mars and began the most detailed mapping of the planet yet, charting its canyons, ice caps, and dried-up riverbeds for nearly a decade. Its maps guided every Mars mission that came after, picking out where later landers and rovers would safely touch down.
