The Large Hadron Collider switches on
The first beam of protons circled the 17-mile ring of the Large Hadron Collider beneath the French and Swiss border. The largest machine ever built, it was designed to recreate conditions just after the Big Bang. Four years later it would help confirm the Higgs boson.
