Newton publishes the Principia
Isaac Newton's Philosophiae Naturalis Principia Mathematica appeared in London, setting out his three laws of motion and the law of universal gravitation. It explained the falling apple and the orbiting Moon with the same mathematics and founded modern physics.
Dolly was born at the Roslin Institute in Scotland, the first mammal ever cloned from an adult cell. Her birth proved that a fully grown cell could be coaxed to build a whole new animal, and it reshaped modern biology.
