    NASA's Mars Pathfinder bounced down on airbags in Ares Vallis and released Sojourner, the first wheeled rover to explore another planet. Its low-cost success showed a nimble new way to reach the surface of Mars.

    Physicists find the Higgs boson

    Scientists at CERN announced they had found the Higgs boson, the long-sought particle that gives other particles their mass. The discovery completed the Standard Model of physics after a search that lasted nearly fifty years.
