Magellan sets off to map Venus
The space shuttle Atlantis sent the Magellan probe on its way to Venus, where its radar would peer through the planet's thick clouds. Over four years it mapped almost the entire surface, revealing volcanoes, lava plains, and craters no one had ever seen. We now know the face of Venus better than the floor of our own oceans.
