    The cause of tuberculosis is revealed

    In Berlin, Robert Koch announced he had identified the bacterium behind tuberculosis, a disease then causing about one in seven deaths. Knowing the true cause turned a mysterious killer into something science could finally fight, and the date is now marked as World Tuberculosis Day.
