    Urbain Le Verrier is born

    The French astronomer Urbain Le Verrier was born on this day. He found a new planet with pen and paper, working out where an unseen world must be from the way it tugged on the orbit of Uranus. When astronomers pointed a telescope where his math said to look, Neptune was there, almost exactly.
