    Dmitri Mendeleev is born

    Dmitri Mendeleev was born in Siberia, one of a very large family. He arranged the known elements into the periodic table and, trusting its pattern, left gaps for elements not yet found. When gallium, then germanium, turned up years later with the very properties he had predicted, chemistry had its master plan.
