The National Geographic Society is founded
A group of explorers, scientists, and mapmakers met in Washington and founded the National Geographic Society to spread knowledge of the world. Its yellow-bordered magazine and its grants would fund expeditions, research, and photography that brought the far corners of the planet home to millions.
