Deep Impact sets off to strike a comet
NASA launched Deep Impact from Cape Canaveral to do something no one had tried: fire a heavy slug into a comet and watch what flew out. That July it hit Comet Tempel 1 head on, and the debris gave scientists their first look at what a comet is made of inside.
