Meta-analysis: what it means when studies get pooled

A meta-analysis pools many separate studies into one combined estimate, which usually beats any single study, as long as the studies it pools are sound.

When one study says coffee helps and the next says it hurts, a meta-analysis is how scientists try to settle the argument. It gathers the studies that asked the same question and combines their numbers into a single, bigger estimate. More people, more data, less noise. It is a big part of why you should trust a body of evidence more than any one headline.

The reason pooling works is size. A small study can land on a fluke by chance alone. Twenty small studies, added together, tend to average those flukes out and land closer to the real answer. A good meta-analysis also weights the studies, so a careful trial of ten thousand people counts for more than a shaky one of forty. Done well, it is about the strongest evidence there is, which is why it sits at the top of the pile.

Here is the catch, and it is a big one. A meta-analysis is only as good as the studies you feed it. Pool a heap of weak or biased studies and you get a precise-looking average of junk. Statisticians have a name for it: garbage in, garbage out. There is also publication bias. Studies that find nothing often never get published, so the ones left to pool can be a skewed sample that tilts the result toward the dramatic.

So when a headline leans on a meta-analysis of thirty studies, that is usually a good sign, better than any single paper. But read one layer down. Were the pooled studies any good, and did their results agree or scatter all over the map? A tight meta-analysis of solid trials is close to the last word. A neat average of shaky ones just hides the mess under a confident number.

Is a meta-analysis better than a single study?

Usually, yes. By combining many studies on the same question, a meta-analysis has more data and averages out the flukes that can throw off any one study, which is why it sits near the top of the evidence hierarchy. The exception is when the studies it pools are weak or biased, because combining bad studies just produces a confident wrong answer.

What is publication bias in a meta-analysis?

Studies that find a striking result are more likely to get published than studies that find nothing. So the pool of published studies a meta-analysis draws from can be skewed toward positive findings, which pushes the combined estimate away from the truth.
