    Charles Goodyear, who tamed rubber, is born

    Charles Goodyear was born in New Haven, Connecticut. After years of failure and debt he stumbled on vulcanization, the process that makes rubber tough and stable in heat and cold. His discovery gave the world everything from durable tires to waterproof boots.
