Clara Barton is born
Clara Barton was born in Massachusetts. A schoolteacher who taught herself nursing, she tended wounded soldiers on the battlefields of the Civil War, then founded the American Red Cross to bring aid wherever disaster struck. Its volunteers still answer floods, fires, and famines around the world.
On Christmas morning, the James Webb Space Telescope rose on a rocket from South America, the largest and most powerful telescope ever sent to space. Folded up like origami for the ride, it unfurled a gold mirror to catch the faint infrared light of the very first galaxies. It is showing us the universe as it looked over 13 billion years ago.
