    Srinivasa Ramanujan is born

Srinivasa Ramanujan was born in southern India. Largely self-taught, working alone with little more than a single textbook, he produced thousands of astonishing mathematical results, many of which no one else had imagined and some that mathematicians are still unpacking today. India now marks his birthday as National Mathematics Day.
