Gaia sets out to map the galaxy in 3D
Europe launched the Gaia spacecraft to measure the exact positions, distances, and motions of more than a billion stars, building the most detailed three-dimensional map of the Milky Way ever made. Its star charts have reshaped what we know about the shape, history, and future of our own galaxy.
