The whole Earth, caught in a single photograph
On their way to the Moon, the crew of Apollo 17 photographed the fully lit face of the Earth, an image that came to be known as The Blue Marble. Seeing the planet whole, alone and without borders against the black, gave the growing environmental movement its defining picture.
