    The universe turns out to be far bigger than we knew

    Edwin Hubble's finding hit the newspapers: the fuzzy patch called the Andromeda nebula was not a cloud inside our galaxy but a whole separate galaxy, unimaginably far away. Overnight the known universe grew from a single galaxy to countless ones. Ours was just one island of stars among billions.
