Gerhard Domagk is born
Gerhard Domagk was born in what is now Poland. He discovered that a red dye called Prontosil could cure deadly bacterial infections, the first of the sulfa drugs and the first medicine that reliably beat blood poisoning. He first proved it in desperation on his own daughter, and saved her arm.
