    The U.S. Army gets its first Black general

    Benjamin O. Davis Sr. was promoted to brigadier general, the first African American to reach that rank in the United States Army, after more than forty years in an army that had kept its highest ranks closed to Black soldiers. His son would go on to lead the Tuskegee Airmen and become a general too.
