In his New Jersey laboratory, Thomas Edison tested a carbon-filament bulb that glowed for more than 13 hours, the breakthrough that made electric light practical. Earlier bulbs had burned out in minutes. Within a few years, cheap and steady electric light began to push back the dark.

1975
The Soviet lander Venera 9 touched down on Venus and sent back a photograph of the rocky ground around it, the first image ever taken from the surface of another planet. It lasted only about an hour in the furnace-hot, crushing air. For that hour, we stood on Venus.
