The first commercial nuclear power station opens
Queen Elizabeth II opened Calder Hall in northern England, the first nuclear plant to send power to a national grid on a commercial scale. Electricity for ordinary homes now flowed from splitting atoms. The age of civilian nuclear energy had begun.
