    East and West Germany become one again

    Less than a year after the Berlin Wall opened, East and West Germany formally reunited into a single country, ending 45 years of division. Families and a city split by the Cold War were whole again. It was the clearest sign yet that the long standoff between East and West was ending, mostly peacefully.
