Egyptian hieroglyphs are deciphered
Jean-François Champollion announced to the French academy that he had cracked the code of Egyptian hieroglyphs, using the Rosetta Stone to tie the ancient script to a known language. Three thousand years of silent inscriptions could suddenly be read. A whole civilization began to speak again.
