Matthew Webb waded ashore near Calais after almost 22 hours in the water, the first person to swim the English Channel without any artificial aid. His crossing turned long-distance swimming into a celebrated test of human endurance.
Voyager 2 swept past Neptune, the most distant of the giant planets, sending home the first close pictures of its deep blue clouds and racing storms. It was the final planet on a twelve-year tour of the outer solar system.
