America's first soft landing on the Moon
NASA's Surveyor 1 settled gently onto the Moon's Ocean of Storms, the first American spacecraft to make a soft lunar landing. It sent home thousands of photographs and showed that a lander would not sink into the dust, clearing the way for the Apollo astronauts.
