    The inventor of the Petri dish is born

    The German microbiologist Julius Petri was born on this day. Working in Robert Koch's lab, he came up with the simple shallow glass dish with a lid that still bears his name. It gave scientists a clean, easy way to grow bacteria and see them, and it is still on the bench in every microbiology lab.
