The idea that became the EU is proposed
The French statesman Robert Schuman proposed pooling French and German coal and steel, the industries of war, under one shared authority. Old enemies binding their economies together was meant to make another war between them unthinkable. That small plan grew into the European Union, and May 9 is now kept as Europe Day.
