    Spontaneous generation is disproved

    Louis Pasteur, working with the physiologist Claude Bernard, completed experiments showing that broth sealed from the air stays lifeless. Microbes come only from other microbes. Laying the old idea of spontaneous generation to rest cleared the path to germ theory, antiseptic surgery, and safe food.
