  1. 1889

    The Eiffel Tower is completed

    Gustave Eiffel led a small party up the stairs of his finished tower and raised the French flag at the top, completing the tallest structure in the world at the time. Built of open iron latticework for a world's fair, it showed what bold engineering could do and became the symbol of Paris.
