    The second asteroid is discovered

    The German astronomer Heinrich Olbers spotted Pallas, the second asteroid ever found, a little over a year after the first one turned up. Two small worlds in the same gap between Mars and Jupiter hinted that a whole belt of them was waiting. Thousands are known today.
