    Joseph Fourier is born

    The French mathematician Joseph Fourier was born on this day. He showed that almost any signal or curve can be built from simple waves added together, an idea that now sits inside music streaming, medical scanners, and phone calls. He was also among the first to describe how the atmosphere keeps the Earth warm.
