Carbon-14 is discovered
The chemists Martin Kamen and Sam Ruben identified carbon-14, a heavy, slowly decaying form of carbon. Because living things take it in and it fades at a steady rate after they die, it became the clock scientists use to date wood, bone, and cloth thousands of years old.
