Elizabeth Blackwell graduated from Geneva Medical College in New York, becoming the first woman to earn a medical degree in the United States. She opened the practice of medicine to women and went on to help train many who came after her.

Fourteen-year-old Leonard Thompson, dying of type 1 diabetes in Toronto, received a purified insulin injection that rapidly restored his health. A once-fatal disease became something people could live with.
