    The idea of drifting continents is unveiled

    In a lecture in Frankfurt, meteorologist Alfred Wegener proposed that the continents had once been joined and had slowly drifted apart. Colleagues doubted him for years, but his idea grew into plate tectonics, the foundation of modern earth science.
